If you're not in the habit of stashing hard drive data in a safe place, then you have no idea how easy it is to use just one device for everything. Between our smartphones, laptops, tablets, and even televisions - all of which are connected to the internet - there's no telling what information is actually being saved on them. It is said that with so much being saved so easily these days our privacy has been compromised. Well if that's true then something needs be done about it! Having your personal information stolen by hackers is very possible with many internet-connected devices. However, there are some ways to protect yourself from this potential problem without sacrificing too much convenience. For starters, if your devices are not set to automatically update applications and operating systems, do it. It's always better to be safe than sorry. Applications such as Facebook can transmit your personal information such as your photos and messages; therefore, the best way to protect this kind of data is by logging out after each use. You could even delete your account entirely if that makes you feel more at ease! Furthermore, modern computer operating systems like Windows and Apple's Mac OS X offer "Guest" accounts that don't require passwords. This is a good way to maintain privacy. However, the Guest account only allows limited access to certain files and folders. In order to use these files and folders, you must manually assign them a password. A password manager is also a great tool that can simplify the creation of passwords, but still allow users to have different passwords for different websites or services. A password manager will store all of your log-in information securely on a remote server, meaning that even if someone manages to gain access to your computer this will not affect their ability to access those passwords from any other locations. A virtual private network (VPN) is something that you might want to install on your computer if you want to protect your personal information when browsing the web. A VPN is used to create a private network connection between your computer and another computer network. Using a VPN will encrypt all of the data that passes through this "tunnel." This way, even though someone may intercept your internet connection, they will not be able to see what sites you are visiting or what files you are downloading since it is all encrypted using an extremely strong encryption algorithm. If a website asks for extra information beyond a username and password, then there's a good chance it's dangerous. This can be a dangerous website if it asks for more information than the username and password, like credit card info or sensitive personal information. It's important to consider that entering your information into a fraudulent website could result in the loss of your identity. A good rule of thumb is to never share any identifiable information on an unfamiliar website. If you're not sure whether or not it's legitimate, don't risk it!
